Our thoughts are with our Ukrainian and Russian friends and colleagues during these very difficult times. We hope they are safe and stay strong. Team pauldevroom + sputnik has been involved in several housing projects in Moscow. During the work on those projects we met lovely people with whom we have a long standing working relationship and with whom we share the core values of peace, freedom and an open society. With regard to the current situation we regretfully stop our activities in Russia until further notice.
Starting design on new apartment complex in Amsterdam
In the North of Amsterdam, on the city limit, a site is being redeveloped as part of an existing neighborhood from the 1960's. We are happy to have won the architect selection for the project that will house 120 social and mid-rent apartments, combined with a nursing home for 80 elderly. We look forward to develop the project in the coming months with the team of housing association Eigen Haard and contractor KBK.
Ministry of make
In the summer of 2022, the new inter-ministerial Ministry of Make called on a hundred designers and experts to use their collective knowledge and imagination to come up with new designs for the demand for 1,000,000 homes in the period up to 2030. With our design research "Into the woods y'all" we want to contribute to the radical transformation of the Dutch landscape and offer concrete solutions for the housing shortage and the consequences of climate change.
Wenckebach update from the construction site
The construction of Wenckebach, a building with 137 apartments for elderly, is above ground! The building will be located on the corner of Wenckebachstraat and Noordpolderkade in The Hague and will complete the city block at the place where the Majella Church once stood. The characteristic round corners of the building become visible right away.
Under Construction: House L
Great weather to visit the construction site of House L! The rock chimney and the facades with small white tiles combine beautifully. We can't wait for the black 'spider legs' to be put in place.
SuperWest exhibition opened in Amsterdam
The SuperWest exhibition has been opened in the van Eesteren Museum in Amsterdam. In the period 2000-2021, 297 new construction, renovation and transformation projects were completed in the Western Garden Cities, including 22 prize-winning buildings. The models of these designs are now on display and the Schutterstoren is one of them. With an exhibition, book, neighborhood exhibition, models, lectures, walks and an audio tour, the Van Eesteren Museum puts the urban renewal in the spotlight for six months.

Wellton Gold receives Grand Prix at Moscow Urban Awards 2021
On November 24th 2021 Wellton Gold won the Grand Prix at the annual Moscow Urban Awards ceremony. The project also received the award for Best Business Class Apartment Complex. The Grand Prix is awarded by public vote, after a pre-selection of 10 projects by the professional jury from all nominations in all categories.
Each time when a project is finished, we try to send a professional photographer to make beautiful pictures of the built result of our efforts. Ruben Dario Kleimeer has been one of our favorites for years now. Great architecture photography goes far beyond getting the horizon horizontal and the colors right. When we commission a photographer we always ask for two types of images. One type is a series of pictures we call “the wedding reportage”, that show all sides of the project “as if you’re there”. The other type is the artist’s interpretation of our work.
Office Big Green Egg Europe awarded the Adriaan Dessing prize 2020
The Adriaan Dessing Prize is a bi-anual architecture award for outstanding architecure projects in the Westland area of The Netherlands. We are very proud to be the winner of both the jury prize and the public vote prize . From the jury report: The journey from the modest and inconspicuous exterior of the building to the high-end and timeless interior is a gem in the Westland area. The jury highly values the architectural quality of the project, that has been elaborated from the plan layout to the construction detail. The jury emphasizes that the cooperation between architect and client has lead to the synergy that is required to realize such an outstanding project.
during lockdown #1
During the Covid-19-lockdown period, some work got postponed, so we suddenly had some spare time. We were physically separated as well, setting up workplaces at home. As an experiment we entered some open design competition, while communicating as a team solely through Slack and Zoom. We enjoyed the experiment and the resulting design, but we even more liked it when after 2 months, we could join each other in the office again.

New typology for Dutch refugee centers
Since 2014 we have been working with Centraal Orgaan opvang Asielzoekers, COA, on different assignments for refugee housing. We find it a very rewarding job to work on projects to enhance the living circumstances of people in hardship. The general brief for refugee housing is relatively new. In The Netherlands (permanent) refugee centers only exist for 30 years now. In this period the base type for housing evolved somewhat, but we found there was still a lot to be gained on the level of the typology.
Dutch House receives multiple awards
We are proud that the design we made for 360 apartments in two towers in Moscow is received so well!
